Unpleasant connotations

From: Gerald Hodgson, Spennithorne, Leyburn.

MUCH as I applaud the aims of the business promotion group Yorkshire Mafia, I do worry about the title. Can it be a good idea to name yourselves after the world’s most notorious criminal gang?

I anticipate that one effect of this name will be to cement the ill-found prejudice in some circles that business people are a bunch of crooks. Nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion. In a lifetime in business, I have found the standard of ethics among business people to be very creditable and almost certainly better than the population at large. Why give the prejudiced a stick to beat you with?

Lack of control

I WAS taken to Madame Butterfly recently at Leeds Grand. It was ruined by the lack of carpeting and the behaviour of two people.

A woman with clumpy heels went out coughing and clattered to the exit. She had the discourtesy to return and disrupt everyone a second time. Later, the man next to her went out – and returned, repeating his trip in the second act. People should get their bladders and coughs under control before going to theatre performances.

Day of judgment

From: M Hellawell, Cross Lane, Scarborough.

REGARDING the granting of marriage to same-sex partners, David Cameron, when did God appoint you as his spokesman and give you permission to change the sacrament of matrimony? Your arrogance is beyond belief. Any Christian principles you may once have had appear to have gone out of the window. But remember you will have to answer to that self-same God, the creator.
