Turn the page on tired texts

From: Tom Valentine, Tempest Avenue, Darfield, Barnsley.

I AM in full agreement with your Editorial about removing hackneyed texts such as Of Mice and Men and Lord of the Flies from the English Literature syllabus (Yorkshire Post, February 25). They have been taught for a deal too long and people have become far too familiar with them. Can I suggest that we give the same treatment to Macbeth, Twelfth Night and the poetry of Wilfred Owen?

Dressing down

From: Michael Day, Rochdale Road, Greetland, Halifax.

WHEN I first read the letter from Mr Ellis concerning the cost of a dress for the Duchess of Cambridge (Yorkshire Post, February 25), I thought it was going to be some kind of joke, but sadly it was not. My advice to Mr Ellis is to have the chip removed from his shoulder.

On the edge

YOUR report about coastal erosion at Knipe Point (Yorkshire Post, February 18) conjured up a picture of houses on a conveyor belt. The report said that the houses were creeping perilously close to the cliff. Sadly, for the owners of the properties, the reality is that it is the cliff edge which is moving as a result of on-going coastal erosion.

Army whingers

From: Aled Jones, Mount Crescent, Bridlington.

ARMY privates whinging about their “meagre” take home pay make me sick. There are families surviving on far less than basic army pay, and producing model citizens as well.
