The more that voters see of Liz Truss the less they like her - Yorkshire Post Letters

From: David Ingham, Ripon.

The more that voters see of Liz Truss the less they like her and she arrives in Downing Street thought of as out of touch and with unpopular views, even by Conservatives.

Their leadership campaign has seen the Conservatives drop policies that it was elected on in 2019, not least the levelling up of the regions, and to lurch further right on the environment, education, health and immigration.

Truss seems set to double down on a culture-war and push right on the economy, she may even try to stamp her mark as PM by suspending the Northern Ireland protocol and removing the UK from the European Court of Human Rights.

In the midst of an economic crisis the Tories look set to lose seats at the next election, both in Red Wall seats and its southern heartlands. This is becoming clearer even before Truss's removal company has unpacked her furniture.

The delusion that Brexit was a good idea has turned the Tory party into a place where incompetence and stupidity are promoted and if Truss fills her cabinet with Boris Johnson supporters she will quickly lose the confidence of many of her own MPs, some of whom will have their letters to the 1922 committee drafted already. The Johnson government wrecked the economy and has ruined the UK's relationship with our friends and allies, it destroyed trust in politics with flagrant corruption and Johnson deserves to go down as the worst Prime Minister of all time, so far.

Will Truss be a "Johnson Lite" Prime Minister, Boris without the gags and the bluster, without the performance and showbiz personality? Will there be another leadership election soon or will she hasten a general election?
