I FIND it shameful this country is experiencing the ongoing scandal relating to illegal flammable cladding on flats (The Yorkshire Post, February 2).

This led to many unnecessary deaths and untold misery at Grenfell Tower in June 2017.

It is now blighting the lives of many people across the country who live in daily fear of their lives, and fear for their financial security.

Why such a delay in rectifying the problem?

The cladding in question was installed by builders who, the evidence shows, appeared to know the material was unsuitable and dangerous for high-rise flats.

Why, then, are these builders not required to repair and make safe the buildings they worked on?

After all, if I buy a new car which turns out to be faulty, I am not expected to pay for the necessary repairs – the manufacturer is deemed responsible. Why should these home owners be expected to pay for faulty workmanship as it’s clear the funds being made available by the Government are insufficient?

The Government is very remiss in not demanding the building trade rectify their own mistakes.
