Picture reveals training errors

From: Geoff Hirst, Wakefield Road, Hipperholme, Halifax, West Yorkshire.

WITH reference to your picture of the apprentice at Bradford College (Yorkshire Vision, Summer 2013), this shows three faults of training which are obvious to anyone who has used these machines.

First and most important, the work-piece should be securely held in a vice; second, the flex should be behind the operator and third, the trainee should be holding the grinder by the handle.

He should also be wearing gloves. How competent are the trainers?

You know
it’s coming...

From: Miss D Illingworth, Belvedere Road, Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

I READ with great interest the letter from Bob Swallow (Yorkshire Post, June 10) regarding pet hate words. My own pet hate words are also “you know”. I once heard a well known sports personality being interviewed by a reporter. I counted 14 “you know” phrases in a very short space of time – not quite up to Mr Swallow’s though.

I have now got to the stage where I am able to almost predict when the “you know” words will occur.

In praise of Germany

COMMUNITIES Secretary Eric Pickles has said that he is worried that next year’s recognition of 100 years since the outbreak of World War One could fuel another round of “anti-German” feeling in Britain. I also very much fear that he could well be right. The Germany of today is totally different from that of 1914 or 1933, and fully deserves to be praised and admired for all its people have achieved since those very grim times. Hopefully we can look forward together, as the very best of friends.
