March 21 letters: Worthier way for Minster

From: Steve Marshall, West Wynd, Killingworth, Newcastle.

I VISITED York Minster on March 16 with my wife. Although I was aware of the entry fee charges, I still felt uncomfortable paying to enter this church.

After walking down the Shambles the same evening, I observed a young man fast asleep in the doorway of a shop. I think Minster staff would be better served looking after these people. Surprisingly, Durham Cathedral does not charge an entry fee.

RE the scourge of litter, could the barcodes on discarded items be used to trace the purchaser’s debit card details so a fine could be levied against them? It might encourage personal responsibility.
