‘Maddy’ is not her name

From: ME Wright, Grove Road, Harrogate.

THE McCanns tell of renewed hope in the hunt for their daughter “Maddy” (Yorkshire Post, May 3). “Maddy” was the name invented by and for the convenience of the Daily Express; it was not recognised by Madeleine’s distraught parents, family and friends.

Readers may recall the vile and despicable conduct of that tabloid rag in the early days of the investigation.

May we trust that the Yorkshire Post’s use of this insensitive diminutive is not an indication of things to come?

The real-life Summer Wine

From: JN Duckett, Goole.

ANDREW Robinson’s article (Yorkshire Post, May 4), plus Editorial comment about Roy Clarke’s comedy series Last of the Summer Wine, aroused memories of the 1970s in the village where Roy Clarke and I live.

At that time, three old men from nearby Thorne used to ride aimlessly round our village on their cycles. Then, to relieve their boredom, they would dismount and lay out on the grass verge to pass the time away.

I wonder, did Roy Clarke base his TV characters Compo, Clegg and Foggy on these real-life characters, or were they just a figment of his imagination?

Count on us...

WHY did it take 26 hours for the London Mayoral election result to be announced, most of Friday to count the Leeds city mayor ballot and just minutes for the French presidential election to be declared?

I suspect that it is this country’s jobsworth mentality. Do others agree?
