After having left the EU, Sir Keir Starmer now would be better to focus not on flags but solidarity with straightforward needs such as providing job and educational opportunities, investment in housing, respect for veterans, care for the elderly and homeless, and funding the NHS to be fit for purpose. These should be the emotive, tangible points for his new strategy.

He has plenty of ammunition against the Government currently with the fallout from leaving the EU. We have seen the customs difficulties. Now we are a third country and small businesses are unable to continue trading with EU customers, due to complex red tape.

Red Wall voters need to be shown the benefits of closer EU relationships, evidencing a later “Rejoin” stance in a tangible strategy. It will be a tough job, but we need Sir Keir to single-mindedly seize on each and every one of this Government’s mistakes and show us his mettle.
