Jobs are key to
benefits trap

BILL Carmichael is right to say that people should be better off in than out of work (Yorkshire Post, September 7).

But I should remind him that a single person gets just £71.50 in Job Seekers’ Allowance, as compared with the £240 a week plus a person will get if employed on the minimum wage earning £6.08 an hour. So it isn’t reducing taxes that will help eradicate poverty, rather the creation of jobs for people to go to.

Wind bribes

RE the letter from E Daines (Yorkshire Post, September 7). The three power stations he mentions are generating more power than all the wind turbines. If wind turbines are so good, why does the Government have to bribe (sometimes called a subsidy) businesses to build them? If ever there comes a time when we have to rely on these monstrosities then candle manufacturers will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Back on form

It has been the worst season on record for rain-affected matches, but hopefully Yorkshire should gain promotion back to 
Division 1 of cricket’s county championship.

Furthermore, thanks to the excellent team spirit and good all-round play we should get to the end of the season as the only unbeaten team in the league.

As for Ajmal Shahzad, is it a record for a player to be relegated in two consecutive seasons?
