Image captures the magic of Knaresborough

THE image of the Dropping Well shown in the “From the Archive” section of the letters page (Yorkshire Post, February 20) captures perfectly the natural beauty and splendour of the historic town of Knaresborough.

As a child, I visited Knaresborough on several occasions and my parents took me to Mother Shipton’s Cave and the Dropping Well. This image, therefore, conjured up personal happy memories of carefree, youthful days. I was fascinated by the various toys and objects which are, in reality, calcified by a deposit from the waters.

However, like very many other children, I believed that the Well was a magical place and that my childhood wishes would come to fruition when I threw my pennies into the waters.

I never dreamed that I would eventually live in a beautiful place like Knaresborough, so some of those pennies obviously landed in the right place and at the right time.

The unique charm of my adopted home town has provoked me to let other readers know about forthcoming events in Knaresborough.

The Knaresborough Spring Fayre will take place in the Market Place and Castle Top grounds on April 28 and 29. There will also be a great selection of celebratory events to commemorate HM Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The town will be vibrant with colour and activities.

Of course, the weather plays its usual role and the sun cannot be expected to shine at all times. During periods of showers, there are lovely cafés which provide good-quality refreshments.

As a member of the local Working Groups for the Spring Fayre and Diamond Jubilee celebrations, I can guarantee that a day-trip to Knaresborough should not prove to be a disappointing experience.
