Casting around EU problem

From: David Dunk, Nethergate, Nafferton, Driffield.

IT is all very well Timothy Kirkhope going on about the many problems faced by our fishermen, but he conveniently omits to mention that the EU, of which he is a member, caused them in the first place (Yorkshire Post, March 7).

The EU has also caused a huge increase in fuel costs of inland waterway craft owners by dictating to the Government that there should be an increase in the duty on diesel used in such craft.

There is a simple solution to these and many other problems caused by the EU. It is not, as Mr Kirkhope and his colleagues keep telling us, a radically reformed EU, but to leave it.

Think again on school comforts

From: John Gordon, Whitcliffe Lane, Ripon.

A BEAUTIFULLY designed new school is a tempting thought but is it the right one for Lent in the middle of a recession? The Ripon Choir School has announced plans for a new building which they say is to replace the school they have used for 50 years.

This has made me wonder if comfort is really essential for education. All the stories that one reads about prep-schools tell of the hard beds, the cold showers and the draughty classrooms.

Men who have suffered this speak with pride of their schooldays. Perhaps Ripon should think again.

Further to the letter from Mrs Stockdale (Yorkshire Post, February 26) about mobile libraries closing, my library books are borrowed for up to three weeks. If not finished or for whatever reason, they can be renewed by post, telephone or in person. I think they can also be renewed on-line.

Easy win

From: Colin Cawthray, Elmete Drive, Roundhay, Leeds.

WHILE I could not care less about the Barnsley Central by-election result (Yorkshire Post, March 5), I am sorry to deflate Ed Miliband and the new MP Dan Jarvis by pointing out that a donkey could have won this seat for Labour.
