A place to speak your mind

WHAT a silly letter from David Smith (Yorkshire Post, September 12) in which he asks certain correspondents not to “foist” their opinions “on others ad nauseam”. He enjoys letters that are “interesting and informative”, but in my view fails to take into account that they are interesting and informative from his point of view, and presumably, the “experts”, who may express opinions that he doesn’t relate to or agree with, should be discouraged.

There are people, some regular contributors, who do use the letters page as a platform for letting off steam, making a point, and yes, sometimes giving us a bit of a lecture, which can occasionally be a bit irksome, but the letters page reflects all views.

Unfair cuts

IN recent times Leeds City Council have closed the Leeds Crisis Centre, in adult social care – up to 13 buildings faced closure, mental health day services are under pressure, sports centres facing reduced hours and in some cases closure, the Leeds city centre free bus has been chopped and two hostels for the city’s homeless – Hollies and Richmond Court – have also closed. Why then are the council spending £2m on supporting people to buy their own house?

I thought that our council was there to look after the vulnerable, not cut, cut, cut; and not spend money on helping people who already have thousands in the bank.

Broad enough?

WITH all these emails, texts and tweets flying about, how broad is the broadband? Is it so broad that no government can stop or divert a message? Will someone with technical knowledge explain where all these thoughts are going and can they be captured before they get to where they are supposed to go?
