YP Letters: After Cameron's disappointing deal, bring on the EU vote

David Cameron has been accused of surrendering Britain's interests to the EU.

AS expected, David Cameron’s EU renegotiation results are feeble. He went pleading on bended knee to our lords and masters in Brussels asking for little, and got less. So it is now a straight fight between the Remains, whose primary loyalty is with the EU, and those of us, the Leavers, who know that allowing our country to be taken over by the EU is a mistake.

It is often assumed that the UK will stay a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) – the “Norway option” – after leaving the EU. If so we would, like Norway, have to accept all EU Single Market laws including the free movement of people. That is not entirely bad: Norway had to implement only nine per cent of more than 52,000 EU laws 2000-2013, so it has not been swamped, as the BBC and the Remain supporters claim, by so-called “fax diplomacy” from Brussels.

Nevertheless, there seems little point in the UK leaving the EU only to remain in the EEA, as Norway has done, still partly under the EU’s thumb. Free trade is the better option.

HAVING looked through the wonderful concessions Mr Cameron is claiming to have gained from the European Union, I can’t see much at all that will improve things.

In fact, there is nothing that will make any difference to the way things are run in the UK, everything that has been brought back has to be approved by Europe if we wish to apply for any of the changes.

I believe we would be better in the EU but not at all any price. We need control of our own borders, migration policy, our own laws and our own economy. Give us these back and we stay. Otherwise we need to be out.

AS suspected, Dave’s EU (non) re-negotiation was a complete waste of time. No treaty changes, no repatriation of powers, no ability to control our own laws, money or our borders. The sooner the referendum is called the better.

WE have heard what David Cameron is saying about staying in the EU, but never has he mentioned the costs. I’m sure he feels that the deal he has done is better than nothing, but that is all. How much do we pay in and how much do our farmers lose out because of red tape?
