THE LONG-AWAITED return of All Creatures Great and Small to TV screens is living proof of the ageless adage that imitation is still sincerest form of flattery.

Channel Five’s new series, in which Grassington replaces Askrigg as the fictional town of Darrowby, is testament to the enduring appeal of the original All Creatures which epitomised the very best of BBC light entertainment.

It’s also a nod to Alf Wight, the Thirsk vet, whose chronicles inspired James Herriot, the fictional TV and literary phenomenon now played by Nicholas Ralph who heads an all-star cast for a new generation.

Even performers as accomplished as Samuel West, son of national treasures Timothy West and Prunella Scales, are in awe of the show’s past and legacy. He says that he “can’t help thinking” about the iconic Robert Hardy who played the original Siegfried Farnon.
