IF encouraging economic news is thin on the ground, good news from the rural economy is even rarer. A shining exception, however, is the enterprise shown by the Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes.

Showing the same drive and initiative which rescued the business from closure 18 years ago, the creamery is embarking on a 750,000 scheme to extend its visitor centre, increase employment and boost tourism.

The very fact that the present premises are struggling to cope with the volume of visitors is testament to the allure of the dale itself as

well as its most famous product.

Now, all that is needed to crown a true Yorkshire success story is the long-sought news from Brussels that Wensleydale cheese's name is to be protected and ranked among the cream of speciality European foods.
