Christmas tears over tiers; truce needed in blame game – The Yorkshire Post says

THE sense of resignation, weariness and now trepidation was discernible when a visibly crestfallen Boris Johnson announced new Covid restrictions on Saturday teatime, forcing millions of families to scrap their Christmas plans.

Coming just three days after the PM said just such a move would be “inhuman”, and 48 hours after new Tier measures were put in place, it confirms the virulence of the lethal new variant of coronavirus sweeping parts of the country.

And, understandably, there will be genuine fears that this strain will undermine the efforts in Yorkshire, and the sacrifices made by so many families and businesses, to get Covid under greater control here.

Just what were all those travellers thinking when they hurried to London’s main stations on Saturday evening, in defiance of crystal clear orders from the Government’s top scientists, to catch trains to Yorkshire and the rest of the North?

Their brazen and selfish disregard for others – this is the most difficult Christmas since the Second World War – risks putting an unnecessary further strain on the NHS at a time of year when everyone should be thinking of others. And that they did so was due, in part, to a growing disrespect for Britain’s senior politicians as Ministers and Labour demean themselves by trading insults to mask their respective policy failings.

Just as the PM was wrong to build up hopes to such an extent, despite a vaccine now being rolled out, with his colourful language,

Labour only began to intimate more clearly yesterday that it would have acted sooner over cancelling Christmas.

What this country expects this week is a truce, and all politicians now working together in the national interest, to suppress a virus known to exploit weakness, ensure there is maximum compliance with the new rules and enable those most in need to receive the support that they will require at this troubling time.
