A church gas supply cut off

March 8, 1909

The gas supply at Penistone Parish Church has been cut off by the gas company because of non-payment. This is a development of a difficulty which has existed for over twelve months between the Vicar, the Rev Canon Turnbull, and the churchwardens.

The wardens took office last Easter on condition that all church moneys were paid into the bank for the use of vicar and wardens, but it is understood they have been unable to draw on the funds in the bank for lack of the vicar’s signature.

Gas and other accounts have, therefore, remained unpaid, with the result that the gas company took the extreme step of cutting off the supply.

To meet this difficulty, the Vicar is holding Evensong at three o’clock on Sunday afternoon until further notice, and no evening service will be held.
