Offenders restore canal towpath

A STRETCH of towpath on the Aire and Calder navigation near Stanley Ferry, Wakefield, has been restored by offenders working with the probation service.

Between October and May a new one-kilometre towpath has been created between Stanley Ferry and Birkwood Lock.

It can now be used more easily by walkers, cyclists and disabled people. In total, more than 1,000 unpaid work days have been recorded by the group and a further two-kilometre stretch is planned for the next section, between Kings Road Lock and Fairies Hill Marina.

Mandy Walker, manager for the Community Payback scheme for West Yorkshire Probation, said: “Offenders have worked hard in all weathers digging out and laying this lengthy new footpath and welcome the challenge of completing more of this demanding work.

“They have developed new practical and life skills which will help with their future work plans of keeping out of trouble and leading a more positive and productive lifestyle away from offending.”

The probation service welcomes suggestions for projects in West Yorkshire. Telephone 01924 885300.
