New city link for cyclists and walkers

A planning application has been submitted for two new bridges and a public bridleway which would link Killamarsh with the Halfway tram terminus, Rother Valley Country Park and the Chesterfield Canal, utilising previously lost routes, canal towpaths and new bridges over the railway and the River Rother.

The new route forms part of the Connect2 project run by charity Sustrans, which was awarded £50m from the Big Lottery Fund to create new everyday walking and cycling links across the country.

Claire Wright, scheme manager for Sustrans, said: “This project will provide a fantastic new link for residents of Killamarsh, making it easier, quicker and safer to get into Sheffield without having to rely on a car.

“These bridges will open up a route that local people have wanted for many years.

“We hope that local residents looking forward to using the new pathway, be it on foot or by bike, will write in to support the planning application.”

The application has been submitted to both Sheffield Council and Derbyshire County Council.
