Neighbouring officers back Mosque's expansion plans

POLICE are backing plans to double the size of a mosque in Hull's oldest public park.

The mosque at 20 Pearson Park was opened in 1992 but now worshippers say they need to expand as they need more room.

They are seeking planning permission to build a two-storey extension to the side and rear, build a minaret on the roof and a rest room, leisure room and garage.

Two petitions against the development have been signed by almost 60 people and 112 letters of objection have been submitted, and the scheme is also opposed by the Avenue and Pearson Park Residents' Association.

Concerns have been raised about the effect on the conservation area, the possibility of the call to prayer being made from the minaret, and the effect of increased traffic, as the larger mosque would accommodate as many as 700 worshippers.

Altogether 80 letters supporting the application have been submitted, as well as petition with 800 signatories.

The mosque is next door to a police station and Humberside Police is among those to have written in support.

Pc Sharon Houfe, community cohesion officer, wrote: "We have worked together with the mosque committee and the wider community on a number of occasions and... this work has undoubtedly helped towards strengthening community cohesion in the area.

"We welcome the fact that the mosque is looking to grow and look forward to continuing to support them in their work with the local community."

Hull Council's planning committee will consider the application on Wednesday.
