Murder charge over death of patient, 85

A MAN aged 64 has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with murdering a fellow patient, aged 85, at a Yorkshire hospital.

Alex Taylor appeared before Sheffield magistrates on Saturday after police were called to the city's Northern General Hospital early on Friday.

A police spokesman said the alleged victim, Keith Headland, pictured, was admitted to the hospital after staff at Grenoside Grange Hospital in the north of Sheffield, called an ambulance.

He was suffering with what officers called "life threatening injuries" when he arrived and in spite of the efforts of paramedics, died shortly after his admission.

The police spokesman said the results of a preliminary post-mortem had revealed that Mr Headland died from heart failure.

Taylor, who was also a inpatient at Grenoside Grange Hospital, was arrested by detectives and charged with Mr Headleand's murder late on Friday.

The hospital, in Salt Box Lane, Grenoside, is a former cottage hospital, but now offers specialist services for older people who are suffering with mental illnesses such as dementia.

Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Grenoside Grange Hospital, said staff were assisting police with their inquiries and was carrying out its own investigation.
