Medical student in surgery prize bid

A MEDICAL student who beat 17 others from across Yorkshire will now compete with Britain’s best trainee doctors in a bid to bring a national surgical skills prize back to the county.

Abhilash Sudarsanam, a fourth year medical student at Sheffield University, was judged the best in a group of young medics from universities in Hull, Leeds, York and Sheffield.

He has now won his place in the grand final of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Lister Surgical Skills Competition, which takes place in Edinburgh on February 11.

Mr Sudarsanam said: “I was fairly confident thanks to past experience assisting in several surgeries from the second year of medical school. I knew I stood a good chance.

“I hope taking part in this competition will improve my career prospects, creating a good impact at the grand final will be even more important and I am eagerly looking forward to it.”

The champion at the grand final wins a trip to Johnson & Johnson’s skills centre in Hamburg, Germany, which has sponsored the competition. The Lister Surgical Skills Competition has been organised to commemorate the life of Lord Joseph Lister, 100 years after his death.

Lord Joseph was world-renowned for his groundbreaking work and according to staff at the Edinburgh college, where he was a fellow, he is now regarded as “the father of modern surgery”.
