Medal award for dementia campaigner

a DEMENTIA campaigner from Yorkshire has been presented with a British Empire Medal for his tireless work to improve the care of people with the condition.

Alzheimer’s Society ambassador Trevor Jarvis, of Skellow, Doncaster, was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2001, but prides himself on living life to the full. Since his diagnosis he has had to contend with losing old friends, being avoided by neighbours and challenging others to maintain control over his life.

He has spoken at conferences across the UK about his experiences and awarded an honorary degree from Bradford University for his work. He was given the medal at a ceremony on Saturday at Doncaster Mansion House.

He said: “This isn’t about me – I am no-one special – it’s for all us campaigners who are gradually changing the way society treats people with dementia.”
