Man held over alleged assault of pensioner

A MAN has been arrested over an attack on an 87-year-old woman which left her critically ill in hospital.

The householder suffered a head injury when she was assaulted on January 1 after she confronted a man during a suspected burglary at her home in Victoria Court, York.

The victim’s son arrived home in time to tackle the man and he left the scene on a bicycle.

North Yorkshire Police said a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and assault and was being held in custody for questioning.

Officers are still trying to trace the bike used, described as grey or silver and old-style with straight handlebars.

Detective Superintendent Heather Pearson said enquiries were ongoing and asked witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

“The victim in this case is 87 years of age and as a result of the assault remains in a critical condition in hospital,” she added.
