Livestock killed as massive blaze decimates pig farm

The fire was reported early yesterday morning at Wood Laithes Farm, Ardsley, off Doncaster Road, and is believed to have started in straw bundles before spreading to a nearby agricultural building.

Around nine fire engines rushed to the scene, with residents living near the farm being advised to keep doors and windows closed as crews continued to tackle the blaze throughout much of yesterday.

The farm building affected by the fire is understood to have housed about 500 pigs – many of which have reportedly been killed.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The fire started in a large amount of straw and then it spread to a nearby agricultural building.

“Fire crews were called to the scene at 4.30am with nine fire engines and support crews in attendance.”

While the fire service spokesman confirmed the blaze started in bales of straw and pig manure, it is not yet clear what caused the fire.

Traffic delays were reported on Doncaster Road yesterday morning, following the blaze.
