‘Last Tango’ in running for a TV Bafta

Written by Yorkshire-born TV writer playwright Sally Wainwright, Last Tango is a tale of two pensioners who rekindle a relationship.

Filmed in and around Halifax, it starred Derek Jacobi, who is nominated for Leading Actor along with Sean Bean who played a transvestite teacher in Accused, Ben Whishaw for Richard II, and Toby Jones, who played Alfred Hitchcock in The Girl.

Anne Reid, who starred alongside Jacobi, is nominated for leading actress along with Rebecca Hall from Parade’s End, Sheridan Smith for Mrs Briggs, and Sienna Miller for The Girl.

Last Tango’s Sarah Lancashire is nominated for supporting actress along with Anastasia Hille from The Fear, Imelda Staunton from The Girl, and Olivia Colman from Accused.

Nominated for Drama Series are Last Tango, Ripper Street, Scott & Bailey and Silk.

Danny Boyle’s Olympic opening ceremony and the spoof sitcom inspired by the Games are both in the running for awards.

Olympic satire Twenty Twelve picked up four nominations with its stars Olivia Colman, Jessica Hynes and Hugh Bonneville all recognised.

The coverage of the opening ceremony is nominated in the Sport and Live Event category alongside Super Saturday, the Paralympic Games and the Wimbledon Men’s Final.

Steve Coogan’s return as Alan Partridge in Welcome To The Places Of My Life is also nominated for male performance in a comedy programme, along with Inbetweeners star Greg Davies, who is nominated for Cuckoo.

ITV documentary The Other Side Of Jimmy Savile is nominated in the current affairs category. It featured women describing abuse by the Leeds-born DJ and presenter.

The awards ceremony is on Sunday, May 12.
