Landslip shuts trans-Pennine route

Highways engineers from Derbyshire County Council were called to the A57 Snake Pass between Bamford and Glossop early yesterday and immediately began work to reopen the road.

It took until 2.45pm to clear the debris left after the incident, but last night a spokesman from the council said the road was fully passable.

Yesterday's closure is the latest in a series in recent years caused by both landslips and extreme weather. In last year's freezing conditions the pass was closed for a fortnight.

The route was also shut for several weeks in January and February 2008 after heavy rain led to a major landslide.|
