Among his submissions was a dramatic shot of Hull City FC’s manager Steve Bruce as he held his head in his hands following the defeat to Arsenal in this year’s FA Cup Final.
The shot of student archeologist Laura Bradbeer at the Leeds Museum Discovery Centre provided a moody shot while the image he captured of a child cycling joyfully past flowering bushes at Roundhay Park summed up the best of summer.
The Yorkshire Post’s assistant editor, Ian Day, said: “These awards are the best of the best in newspaper photography.
“James’ portfolio is second to none.”
