Huge rally to mark Jowett centenary

Jowett Car Club committee member Barbara Atackt is helping to prepare a huge rally to mark the centenary of the first car to be sold by the Bradford classic marque.

More than 150 cars and their owners will join the club's International Centenary Rally on May 28 at the Cedar Court Hotel, Wakefield.

The rally, which will be the largest ever gathering of Jowetts, will include two from the first batch of 12 cars that were made at the Five Lane Ends factory in Bradford. Brothers Benjamin and William Jowett founded the company and established their factory at Springfield Works in Idle after the First World War.

In 1920 the company adopted the name Jowett Cars Ltd and began large-scale manufacturing with the Jowett Seven.

After the Second World War Jowett made a series of cars which went on to become design classics, including the Jowett Javelin and the Jowett Jupiter sports car.

The business was sold in 1954 and the company closed down in 1963.

The Jowett Car Club International Centenary Rally takes place between May 28 and 31. There will also be a static Concours event at Cannon Hall, Cawthorne, on May 30.
