Hotelier with the Elvis obsession hoping to say 'I'm all booked up'

A FEW months ago, Elvis fan Dave Elliott feared his business was failing, but an appearance on television last night may have saved him from running the ultimate heartbreak hotel.

Mr Elliott, a trained chef, called in Channel Five's hotel inspector Alex Polizzi, after takings at the Sandygate Hotel in Wath-upon-Dearne, South Yorkshire, began to fall disastrously.

The 44-year-old is well-known in his home town for his obsession with the king of rock'n'roll and he often does impressions of his musical hero for diners who visit his establishment.

When Ms Polizzi arrived to record the programme, Mr Elliott and his wife Dyan were convinced she would find the act appalling and tell them to tone it down for the sake of the business.

But instead she said the couple should make more of the unique selling point, blaming falling revenues instead on confusing menus, huge portions, the shabby exterior and poor website.

Mr Elliott, who has run the Sandygate Hotel for five years, said: "When Alex arrived I thought the first thing to go would be Elvis. But it was quite the opposite.

"I thought she would tell me to dump the lot but instead she told me to display it in the restaurant and make a special feature of it. And she told me to carry on singing.

"Business has picked up really well."
