Hole lot of improvements in £50,000 golf course project

CHANGES costing around £50,000 are being made in a bid to improve an 18-hole golf course in Sheffield.

Sheffield International Venues (SIV), which runs Birley Wood Golf Course, applied for permission to create a new parking area in the grounds of the course with spaces for up to 60 cars.

To create space for the car park, alterations are also being made to the course itself.

The ninth hole will be shortened by around 40 yards and the tee of the first hole is to be extended by around 30 yards, while other tee extensions are also planned.

The putting green will move to the ninth green and a new ninth green will be created on the course.

SIV’s golf manager Andy Carnall said: “The development of Birley Wood’s golf course is an important aspect of ensuring that we offer our customers the best possible experience when using our facilities.

“This, linked with our partnership with Activity Sheffield to boost participation in the sport across the region, will provide us with an excellent platform to attract more people to this already popular golf course.”

SIV has recently teamed up with Activity Sheffield to encourage more people to take part in golf classes. Together, the two organisations are set to create the Sheffield and District Golf Development Partnership, which hopes to bring SIV and Sheffield Council together with golf unions, professionals associations and schools to increase participation.
