Historic market plans are backed

Senior councillors in York have backed a £1.5m revamp of the city’s Newgate Market in a move that has been heralded as a major step forward to help boost trade.

The city has had a market for centuries and it has been held in various city centre locations before it moved into Newgate in 1964. Senior councillors on the authority’s cabinet have backed proposals to invest £1.5m in what is one of the North of England’s largest daily open air markets in a bid to attract more visitors and bolster the local economy. More detailed proposals will now be drawn up and public talks will be held.

York Council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, Coun Sonja Crisp, said: “There has been no investment in the market since 1991 so for us this is the opportunity to bring it up to another level.”

Council officials hope the project will help rejuvenate the market and encourage shoppers to visit more frequently - although it will eventually lead to rent increases for traders.

It is hoped the revamp will be carried out next summer. The market is located in the city centre between The Shambles and Parliament Street.
