Grieving family choose white in tribute to daughter, nine

Many who attended Shamirah Grant’s funeral at St Aidan’s Church, Roundhay Road, in Harehills, Leeds, wore white clothing as a mark of respect, rather than traditional black outfits.

Yesterday’s funeral procession was led by white horses pulling a white hearse.

Shamirah was with friends near her home on Leopold Grove at about 8.30pm on Tuesday May 31, when a car came off the road, careered down an alleyway and down a number of steps onto a grassed area where they were playing.

Shamirah died and two other children were injured.

Two people were arrested and they have already appeared in court in connection with the incident.

Yesterday’s service was followed by an interment at Harehills Cemetery.

Shamirah lived all her short life in the community of Chapeltown, in Leeds. Her father, Gary and mother, Jennifer, have described her as “the life and soul of the family”.

She had three sisters, Shaliyah, Taneesha and Sasha, and brothers Daniel and Shaquille.
