Gallery reflects on 15 years of artistic collaboration

Artists who have played a part in the history of a pioneering gallery and studios complex have provided work for an exhibition to mark the venue's 15th anniversary and its move to new, bigger premises.

S1 Artspace has been operating from a space above the Corporation nightclub in Trafalgar Street, Sheffield, since 1995 after it was founded by a group of city-based artists who were looking for affordable studio space.

Since then many artists have made use of the rooms on offer, and permanent curator Louise Hutchinson said that earlier this year it was decided to take larger premises, next door to S1's current home.

She added: "The new S1 Artspace is a large industrial building as opposed to the first floor space we had above the nightclub.

"We are now able to offer different facilities to artists in the city and different types of space. We are still offering open plan studio areas but there are also some private working spaces.

"We will also be offering a woodworking shop and some small businesses have also taken rooms here."

The exhibition of work, which Ms Hutchinson said was designed to show S1 Artspace's "collaborative way of working", opened on Friday night and continues until February 5.
