Fraud police quiz golf club secretary

Nick Redman, managing secretary at Malton and Norton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, was 
arrested last Wednesday in connection with a number of allegations of fraud relating to the club’s finances.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police have a arrested a man in his fifties from West Yorkshire in connection with allegations of fraud involving the finances of Malton Golf Club.

“He has been released on police bail while the investigation continues.”

Mr Redman is still employed by the club and has not been suspended.

Club captain Ray Chapman said: “An investigation is taking place. The club is run by a management committee and it’s business as usual.”

Mr Redman is believed to have joined the club in July, 2010, 
after spending just over three years as secretary of Baildon Golf Club in West Yorkshire, and staff there said they were shocked by his arrest.

Paul Weatherill, secretary of Baildon Golf Club, said: “He left here on perfectly good terms; he’s still a member. It’s a bigger club (Malton) and I think he went for the experience as well. I’m fairly sure this was the first club he was secretary of. He just wanted a larger club.”

He added: “I know Nick quite well, I’ve known him for the 20 years I’ve been a member. If that’s what’s happened I’m surprised.”

Malton and Norton, which was founded in 1910 and is now a 27-hole course, is the “home club” of European Tour professional Simon Dyson, who is currently 81 in the world rankings.
