He did not enter a plea.
Chairman of the bench, Yvonne Steam, committed the case to Newcastle Crown Court, where Carroll will face a judge for a preliminary hearing on June 2.
He was released on conditional bail.
The conditions were that he does not enter the Bigg Market or contact prosecution witnesses.
The 6ft 4in forward, who was voted one of Newcastle United's players of the season yesterday, was hailed this week by Magpies' boss Chris Hughton as "a classic, old style centre forward".
His 19 goals in 41 appearances helped propel Newcastle United to the top
of the Coca-Cola Football League Championship and promotion back to the Premier League.
