Fire shuts Marks and Spencer store

A MAJOR branch of Marks and Spencer had to be closed yesterday following a fire there.

The fire at the M & S store at the Owlcotes Centre, at Pudsey, near Leeds, happened at 5.10am yesterday.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, a spokesman for Marks and Spencer said yesterday.

The spokesman added: “The site is currently closed and will remain closed for the rest of the day.

“We are working very hard on getting that site re-opened and clearly we will do that as soon as we can.”

The spokesman added: “The emergency services were quick to attend and the fire was very quickly extinguished.”

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said yesterday that the fire had occurred in the food hall.

The store’s ground floor was left smoke logged, while the lower ground floor also suffered smoke logging and was damaged by water from the store’s sprinkler system.
