Festival highlights Lewis Carroll

AUTHOR Lewis Carroll's childhood in Richmond will come under the spotlight at a literary festival which is being staged in the North Yorkshire market town this autumn.

The Rev Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who used the pseudonym Lewis Carroll to write Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, lived in Ripon while his father was a canon of the city's cathedral, and was also a pupil at Richmond School.

The Lewis Carroll Society will be at the Richmond Walking and Boot Festival to discuss the time that the Victorian writer spent in the town as a child.

Other guests at the festival include journalist and historian Sir Max Hastings, former MP Chris Mullins, Reggie Perrin scriptwriter David Nobbs and cricket columnist Harry Pearson as well as children's authors Terry Deary and Helen Stephens.

The festival will be held between September 24 and October 3, and will also include a series of 35 walks throughout the Yorkshire Dales.
