Farmer’s preservation work hailed

A NIDDERDALE farmer has been honoured for his work to preserve the natural habitats of some of Yorkshire’s most precious landscapes.

Jack Graham, from Haver Close Farm, near Lofthouse, has been named as the Enterprising Farm Award Winner for 2011 by the Friends of Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Run in association with the Nidderdale Agricultural Society, the award is given to farmers working within the AONB, who have demonstrated enterprise and commitment to enhancing the natural environment.

Mr Graham impressed judges with his work in preserving blanket bog, upland heath and mixed ash wood- lands.

Judge Brian Wood said: “Mr Graham’s 628 hectare farm is located in one of the dale’s most important yet uncompromising areas close to Scar House reservoir, a part of the dale popular with walkers.

“His work in the enhancement of moorland, protection and restoration of dry stone walling and stock proofing ancient woodlands has been undertaken with great care and sympathy for the landscape.”
