EAST YORKSHIRE: Victorious MP predicts there'll be another election next year

TORY Greg Knight more than doubled his majority in East Yorkshire as Labour was beaten badly into third place.

Mr Knight secured a win by more than 13,000 votes over Liberal Democrat Robert Adamson, who narrowly won the race for second place with Labour's Paul Rounding. There was a turnout of 64 per cent.

Mr Knight, who yesterday toured his constituency to thank supporters, said he believed his big win was due to a number of local and national factors – but predicted the overall result could lead to another General Election next year.

"Labour's supporters were dispirited with their leader, and the 'bigot' comment by Gordon Brown, I think, hit them more than many people have admitted," he said.

"I think that I am also a full-time MP and have worked hard in the constituency.

"There is also anger with the Labour Party in the east of the constituency with the cutbacks they have approved at Bridlington Hospital."

He added: "I think a hung Parliament is the worst scenario for Britain and I have never understood why people think it's a good idea, with the party with the smallest number of seats potentially wielding the greatest power.

"I am worried about what is going to happen and I think it will probably be a fairly short Parliament.

"There is a recognition by MPs of all parties that this country is in one hell of a mess and there is a willingness on all sides, because people know the electorate is watching, that agreements need to be reached for the benefit of Britain.

"But I am fearful that any agreements will come undone sooner rather than later."
