Duchess chooses tartan look for Scotland and takes up knitting

A TARTAN clad Duchess of Cambridge revealed she has been trying to learn to knit as she greeted well-wishers on a visit to Scotland.

The Duchess was presented with a woollen hat, babygro and teddy bear by 17-year-old Caitlin Coffield, a resident of Glasgow’s Southside.

She said: “I’ve been trying to knit and I’m really bad. I should be asking for tips.”

Accepting the gifts, she added: “It’s very sweet of you. I’ll keep it safe for the big day.”

She was speaking as she visited the Quarriers Stopover Project, which provides short-term accommodation and support to young people, with the Duke of Cambridge.

The day also included a visit to Glasgow’s Emirates Arena which will be a venue for next year’s Commonwealth Games, where the couple watched riders take part in a practice session at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The Duke and Duchess went on to the Glasgow Club Donald Dewar leisure centre in the Drumchapel area of the city, where they played against each other in a short game of table tennis.

Onlookers cheered the pair on before they were joined in a doubles match by Yaser Razouk, 14, and Stephen Grimes, 16.

There the couple also launched the first Scottish pilot of the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry’s Coach Core programme.

It is designed to help at least 20 young people into 18-month coaching apprenticeships ahead of the next Commonwealth Games.
