Driver killed and another injured in Sheffield

ONE man died and another was seriously injured in a four-vehicle collision in Sheffield this morning.

It happened on the A61 Westwood New Road, close to Thompson Hill in the High Green area of the city.

Police said a blue Vauxhall Astra was in collision with a black Audi A3 as it was overtaking. The impact forced the Audi into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with a blue Lexus.

The fourth car, a grey BMW following the Lexus towards Barnsley, was then in collision with the Astra which had spun into the opposite carriageway.

The Audi driver, a 47-year-old man from Monk Bretton, Barnsley, suffered fatal head and internal injuries.

The Lexus driver suffered serious chest injuries and is detained in the city's Northern General Hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident or anyone who saw the cars being driven prior to the collision. They are asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2970.

The Astra driver, a 45-year-old woman from Sheffield, has been arrested for causing death by dangerous driving and is currently being questioned by police.
