Drive towards a low-emissions city

A STRATEGY is being drawn up to ensure that a Yorkshire city is at the forefront of a national drive to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

A comprehensive plan is being developed for York to build on existing work to reduce car journeys and slash harmful emissions.

York Council is looking to major planning documents, such as the Local Development Framework, to create an overarching strategy for a low emissions city.

Steps which could be taken include developing a network of electric vehicle charging points in addition to those recent installed at the new Waitrose supermarket, and encouraging the use of low emissions technology.

Low emission buses are already being trialled along Fulford Road.

The council’s executive is due to approve the outline framework for a low emissions strategy tomorrow.

Despite ongoing work which has seen York recognised as a low-emissions champion in the region, there are concerns about the city’s air quality.

The Yorkshire Post revealed in June last year that pollution had been linked to an estimated 158 premature deaths in York every year.
