Doves of peace mark slaughter of Somme

Children from Kellbank CE Primary School release doves during a service for the Leeds Pals battalion of the First World War at the camp where they trained in North Yorkshire.

On July 1, 1916, more than 570 men of the 15th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment – the Leeds Pals – went "over the top" in the first charge of the Battle of the Somme. By the end of the day, more than 500 had perished.

The Leeds men were among the 20,000 dead and 40,000 wounded at the Somme in the carnage of the first day of the battle. The annual service marks the start of the battle and is held at Colsterdale, north of Ripon, at the former camp.
