Delays alert as major road improved to cut congestion

Drivers can expect delays and disruption when roadworks begin on one of Doncaster's busiest roads next week.

Major roadworks are set to take place on the A630 Balby Road, close to the junction with the A60 Sandford Road, from Monday, January 17.

The improvements should be complete by the end of March and include surfacing the road and footpaths, improving traffic lights so they respond to traffic flows, putting in new kerbs and lighting, filling in a subway and constructing a new pedestrian crossing.

After the roadworks, a short section of road at the Sandford Road junction will also give buses priority.

Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies said: "These much-needed improvements along the A630 Balby Road will ease congestion, reducing journey times for local residents and commuters into the town centre.

"The scheme will also see essential road maintenance work take place and make one of Doncaster's busiest routes into town safer for pedestrians."

Inbound and outbound lane closures will be required during the works and at times Albany Road, Alexander Road, Earlesmere Avenue and St. John's Road will be closed.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said: "Delays are likely, especially at peak times, but disruption will be minimised with traffic signals changed to improve traffic flows and surfacing works carried out at night under a convoy working arrangement.

During a consultation, 82 per cent of locals who responded to a survey said they agreed with the roadworks in principle.
