Defence academy waits for election

A final decision on whether to go ahead with a £12bn defence academy is unlikely to be taken before the general election, said Armed Forces Minister Bill Rammell.

The Defence Training Review, which would create a new military technical college in St Athan, South Wales, would be one of the biggest private finance initiative (PFI) deals if the Government gave the green light. Bur Mr Rammell told MPs an investment decision, originally due in spring last year, will not be taken until the summer.

The project has been beset with problems and uncertainty, partly because of the impact of the credit crunch on investors.

Training requirements have also changed as a result of the experiences of troops in Afghanistan.
