Deal signed over arts venue funding

FUNDING for performances at the new arts venue in Doncaster's Civic and Cultural Quarter was formalised yesterday, when an agreement was signed between the council and Arts Council England.

The venue is set to benefit from 92,000 from the organisation in 2011/12, to enable staff to develop a programme of events before the venue opens in spring 2013.

Cluny Macpherson, regional director of Arts Council England, said: "The state-of-the-art venue will help make Doncaster an even more vibrant and exciting place to live and visit, ensuring more people's lives are enriched and inspired by arts experiences."

The new performance venue will include a 600-seat main auditorium, a second 200-seat performance space, dance and drama studios, educational facilities and an open-plan bar and cafe area to open out onto Doncaster's new public square.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, Doncaster Council's cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "This contribution by Arts Council England to the delivery of the new performance venue is a huge vote of confidence in Doncaster at this time."
