Whitby: Body found in derelict house

A BODY found by workmen in a derelict house in Whitby “appears to have been in the property for some time”, police have said.

Police in said they are treating the death as “unexplained”.

Officers were called to the building in seaside town this afternoon.

A force spokesman said: “Officers attended a derelict property in Broomfield Terrace, Whitby, shortly after 2pm on Saturday 26 January 2013, following the reports that workman carrying out renovation work had found a body.

“On arrival, officers found a body which appears to have been in the property for some time.

“The death is currently being treated as unexplained.

“Inquiries remain ongoing to establish the identity and cause of death to establish if there are any suspicious circumstances.”

A police guard has been placed at the scene but detectives said they are unlikely to be able to release any further information for some time.

The spokesman said: “While police enquiries are ongoing, we urge people to refrain from speculating about the incident.

“We are not likely to be in a position to have further updates for several days.”
