Trial date set for man accused of murdering nine-week-old baby boy in Barnsley

A trial date has been set for a man accused of murdering a nine-week-old baby boy in South Yorkshire.

Leon Mathias, 32, of Barnsley appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Mathias is charged with the murder of the nine-week-old boy in November 2018.

He is also charged with Section 18 assault on the same child.

Emergency services were called to a property in the Great Houghton area of Barnsley, just before 9pm on November 30, 2018.

The baby boy was taken to hospital, but died on December 3,

Mathias did not enter a plea at his court hearing on Wednesday and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Mathias will appear before the same court on March 19.

A provisional trial date was set for January 11, 2022.

Mathias was granted conditional bail on the basis he must not have any unsupervised contact with a person aged under 18; not go near or contact any proposed witnesses; and must reside at his home in Barnsley.

He was also ordered to surrender his passport to police.
