Police release three teens over Leeds theatre murder

THREE teenagers who were arrested on suspicion of murdering a man in Leeds city centre have been released on bail.

The 18-year-old men were held by West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major enquiry team on Monday following the death of Robert Adamczyk in the early hours of Sunday.

Engineer Mr Adamczyk, 28, from South Milford near Selby, suffered a fatal head injury after allegedly being attacked on New Briggate in the city centre at around 2am. It is claimed he hit his head on the road after being punched while on a stag night in Leeds.

Police received “significant” information from the public after issuing CCTV images of three suspects queuing outside Space nightclub in the city centre shortly after the incident.

But they made the arrests after the three 18-year-olds, who are from Leeds, presented themselves at a Leeds police station.

The three remained in custody overnight on Monday before being released on bail pending further enquiries late on Tuesday.

It comes as West Yorkshire Police launches a campaign aimed at cutting booze-fuelled violence during the festive period.

West Yorkshire Police’s Be Safe This Christmas initiative aims to raise awareness of the potential consequences of throwing a single punch.

Det Chief Insp Mark McManus said alcohol-related crime tended to increase during the festive season, adding: “Offences such as one-punch manslaughter clearly demonstrate how a flash of alcohol- fuelled temper can result in life-changing consequences for the victim’s family and the perpetrator left facing years in prison as a result of seeing red.”

The campaign will also highlight the increased risk of people becoming victims of theft and sex offences as a result of heavy drinking.

Newly-elected West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson said: “Irresponsible alcohol use can destroy lives.”
